We were on the Nieuw Statendam in January for a 2 week Caribbean itinerary. It was our first time on one of Holland America Lines’ largest ships – what we discovered is that although the ship is larger, the cabins appear to be smaller. We had an aft balcony cabin #5231 and although there was plenty of room for the 2 of us, we did feel overall it was smaller than aft cabins on previous HAL ships. There is a bit of wasted space between the sofa and the balcony door, so we stored our carry-ons behind the curtain in that area.
There seemed to be less closet space, but we discovered extra storage in the cabinet above the sofa. We also asked for an extra chair to tuck into the corner beside the bed (up against the bathroom wall). Something we found quite unusual was that there was absolutely no artwork on the cabin walls; it’s like they totally forgot about it.The balcony was spacious enough for the 2 chairs, footstools, and small table. We didn’t feel cramped with both of us sitting out there enjoying the view of the wake every evening.
Bathroom photos – plenty of storage; a great shower space. Interestingly, though, it was so small that while sitting on the commode, you could actually reach out and open the door . . . . .
